Surgeon General Report

We welcomed in our 20th anniversary year in January at the home of the Pratt family in Enniskillen. There was lots of business to discuss in planning for the new year, a new decade really and many new ideas were brought forward by the executive and by members. We hope 2008 will be an exciting year for the club and will culminate with a milestone, 20th anniversary year end dinner at a great new location!

Gary's new garage full of projects, parts, and other assorted junk was the finale to the meeting but much business was covered in between including New events and New club jackets.

New Events

We are looking at some new things for this year mixed with the old. As usual, we will have a Spring tour, our club picnic in Gravenhurst at Gull Lake Park the day before Father's Day and the gathering for Autofest in Oshawa. Improvements to old events include an expanded weekend at Arthur, and an extra driving tour in July. As well, we are putting together plans for a bus trip for adults to Michigan to visit the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, as well as time for shopping. We will be asking you at an upcoming meeting for commitment on this great event before we open the seats up to non-members: stay tuned for more details. [If you’ve never been before, you are in for a treat and if you have, this is an opportunity to see all you missed and leave the driving to us. Note to spouses; the Henry Ford & Greenfield Village – along with the IMAX theatre are about a lot more than cars – these are true full spectrum heritage displays of anything innovative or significant in North America in the past 150 years – and it is well done! Other ideas put on the table include car shows at Mohawk raceway, Norwood fall fair, Wings and Wheels in Downsview, and Holiday Ford in Peterborough. We also discussed a trip to a Drive In theater, drag racing, a Friday night cruise to Kawartha Downs horse race track, vintage racing at Mosport, go-karting, and tours of both the Chrysler plant in Brampton and the GM plant in Oshawa once the Camaro begins production.

New Get 'Er Done Award

Our plan to encourage people to drive their vehicles last year has been replaced with a new award called "Get 'Er Done". This new plan is an incentive for anyone who is close to finishing their truck and getting it on the road. Beginning on March 1st, we will accept pictures of your unfinished ride. Send us a picture of your truck along with $5 and your name will be entered and a picture posted on the SOCP website. The first person to have their truck on the road, insured and driving to an official club event or meeting will win $100 in cash. Your truck has to be a new vehicle on the road or one that has undergone major changes or redo's, ie. paint and body, chassis update, not just a motor freshen up or reupholster. It's open only to trucks! We encourage you to send pictures of your progress, even if someone wins the cash before you finish yours.

As an added bonus, anyone else who gets their new project truck on the road during the year will also get a free membership for 2009!

New Club Jackets

In celebrating our 20th anniversary, Jason Hustler and Larry Hill are collaborating to create a new jacket, this time a Dickies style garage coat. For anyone who has not seen these, they are a line that Mark's Work Warehouse carries at most of their stores. Artwork is being developed now. We will announce in the newsletter when you can begin to order. We expect jackets to be ready for delivery in the spring. Some updated artwork but with a retro theme should be an exciting addition to our lineup of club apparel.

SOCP Business

There are a few details that members need to be aware of that may apply to them.

  1. Future cheques to the club must be made out to Southern Ontario Classic Pickups, not SOCP by insistence of our bank.

  2. Classified ads: need to given to an executive member at or before club meeting or emailed. Ads will run for 3 issues unless you contact the club to tell us that you want it renewed. If you sell the parts, please contact us to have the ad removed to make space for other members' ads.

  3. There were no persons interested in volunteering for club positions so we will carry on with the status quo, governing by committee as it was successful this year. We are however looking for 1 or 2 new people in being part of the executive for 2008. If that's you, please contact one of the executive: We will give you some responsibility but not too much to be a burden.

  4. Included in this issue is the club financial statement. We look to be in good shape for the year with enough money in the bank for immediate needs. We will not be running a club raffle this year to cover insurance, but will instead use some of the money in the account fro this expense and take a break from fundraising. If you are interested in further details, please bring questions to club administrator Don Cox at a future club meeting.
